The Gurung(Tamu) Society, Inc. was incorporated in August 2001 under Section 402 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law of New York State in the United States of America. Its purpose is to preserve, encourage and enhance social, economic and cultural heritage and cooperation among Gurung(Tamu) people living in and outside the United States of America. The Gurung Society shall seek collaboration with individuals and organizations that respect and celebrate cultural diversity in promoting peace, harmony, and development worldwide, and particularly in Nepal. The Gurung Society shall not directly or indirectly, align with, endorse or raise funds for any political parties or candidates in the United States of America or aboard. Gurung Society membership shall be open to persons of Gurung(Tamu) ethnicity worldwide. Honorary membership shall be open to persons, without regard to their ethnicity, who have made a substantial contribution to the friendly relations of Gurung(Tamu) people, or to the fruitful public knowledge of the Gurung (Tamu) people.
